Apple no longer using TLC NANDs in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

So earlier this week, there were multiple reports talking about crashes and boot loop issues on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The issue was seen mostly in higher capacity devices ( 64 GB and 128 GB).

Apple will now be switching from from TLC (Triple Level Cell) NANDs to MLC (multi level cell) NAND flash in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and will be releasing a fix for the boot loop and crashes with iOS 8.1.1. Flash memory firm, Anobit, which apple acquired back in 2011 is to be blamed for this.

TLC NAND flash is a type of solid-state NAND flash memory that stores three bits of data per cell. It can store three times as much data as single-level cell (SLC) that stores one bit of data, and 1.5 times as much as multi-level cell (MLC) solid-state flash memory that stores two bits of data. On top of that, TLC flash is more affordable. However, it is also slower than SLC or MLC in reading and writing data.

Apple seeded iOS 8.1.1 beta 1 to  developers earlier this week and should available publicly by next couple of weeks. It is not yet confirmed if this particular software update will be fixing the issues for users having boot loop issues and crashes. Hence, for now its recommended to take your device to an Apple store and get a replacement!
